Glacier Park’s Logan Pass could see up to 10 inches of snow over the weekend

Description

A major storm is expected to hit Northwest Montana and Glacier National Park starting Friday and into Sunday, with up to 10 inches of snow predicted for Logan Pass and the higher terrain of the park.

Glacier National Park warned visitors of a possible temporary closure of the alpine sections of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Should the forecasted weather system result in hazardous road conditions, the Sun Road will be closed between Avalanche and Rising Sun, officials said.

The entire park is under a winter storm warning for the time period, with highs only in the 30s on Saturday and Sunday in the higher terrain and not much warmer than that in the lower elevations, noted National Weather Service meteorologist Jen Kitsmiller,

The lower elevations of the park could also see snow, though it’s not expected to stick on the ground.

All told, the region is expected to see 2 to 4 inches of rain, with higher amounts just north into Canada.

The weather will remain showery on Monday and if it clears out Sunday night, there’s the threat of frost.

The last June snowstorm in Glacier was in June of ’22. Snow in June in Glacier is not all that uncommon.

The water is badly needed, regardless. It’s been a warm, dry spring through the latter half of May and all of June and rivers and streams are very low for this time of year.

No significant flooding is expected as a result, as the snowpack is a fraction of normal and rivers and streams are already low for this time of year.
