Description
The alpine section of Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road closed Saturday at 5 p.m. due to snow and ice at higher elevations, including Logan Pass.
The Park Service also closed the Many Glacier Road due to winter conditions, but it reopened to the Many Glacier Hotel Sunday morning. Glacier’s high peaks were showing a topping of snow by Saturday afternoon from the wintry weather.
The Sun Road is open to Avalanche Creek on the west side and Rising Sun on the east side.
Whether the Sun Road will reopen to Logan Pass this season remains in doubt, as the federal government is shut down and Glacier is operating with a greatly reduced staff.
The Sun Road typically closes over Logan Pass in mid-October as Glacier Park crews winterize the road and the visitor center. Road crews have to take down numerous removable guardrails, or risk having them swept away by avalanches over the winter.
At the visitor center, workers board up windows to keep them from being damaged by snow.
The Two Medicine Road is also closed for construction, as contractors are replacing a deep culvert.
This week conditions should improve, with high in the 50s and 60s and sunshine, with cold nights in the 20s and 30s.
