Description
Dr. Clint Seger will become CEO of Billings Clinic – Logan Health next year, hospital officials said Monday, while Kevin Abel will return as president of Logan Health Kalispell and Whitefish.
When Billings Clinic and Logan Health merged in September 2023, Seger was named chief physician executive for the combined health care system. Dr. Craig Lambrecht served as CEO at the time but stepped down in 2024. Seger and Abel were appointed co-CEOs soon after.
The plan was to guide the organization through the early stages of integration, Seger and Abel said. Now it’s time to continue to strengthen and unify as one organization, the pair said.
“I fully endorse Clint in this role,” Abel said. “I think Dr. Seger will do a great job.”
The changes atop the organization will be seamless and are not expected to affect hours or services, hospital board member Jane Karas said.
"It’s part of the evolution,” said Karas. “... A physician-led system with one CEO would help us continue to provide the best services and patient care.”
The Billings Clinic – Logan Health system employs 9,000 people and 1,150 physicians. In 2024, it saw more than 2 million clinic visits throughout Montana and Wyoming.
Seger, a Buffalo, Wyoming native, attended medical school at the University of Washington, followed by a residency in family medicine. He joined Billings Clinic in 2008 at Cody Regional Hospital in Wyoming. His wife, Dr. Nadine Seger, became the clinic’s first neonatologist.
Based in Billings, Seger expanded his practice as a rural hospitalist across both Montana and Wyoming. He was appointed Billings Clinic’s chief medical officer in 2014 and became CEO in 2022.
Seger was inspired to pursue medicine after good experiences with his family physician in his hometown.
Making Seger sole CEO is a positive transition for the hospital system, said board Chair Craig Bartholomew.
The hospital system has improved a lot since the merger, Bartholomew said, pointing to the standardization of hospital record databases and the addition of more departments as examples.
“The system is going the right way,” Bartholomew said. “It’s well positioned, that’s what is great about it to me.”
Having a locally governed system is important to the board, Bartholomew said, especially when it comes to providing rural care. Seger is comfortable working across a large geographical region, he said, pointing toward his experience both as a rural doctor and as CEO of Billings Clinic.
“I’m just really excited for the future,” Seger said.
The position is effective Jan. 1.
